So happy to introduce….

My new book, Metalworking 101 for Beaders!!!  This is a book that I am so very proud of it brings tears to my eyes.  In college I discovered my passion for working with metal and we've had a love affair ever since.  This book will show you a very easy approach to metalworking so you can make your own findings to mix with your beads.  I wanted to make projects that look awesome with very little soldering.

You may have caught me talking about Metalworking 101 on the TV show Beads Baubles and Jewels  (episode 1102) when I showed how to make easy button and hook clasps that blend in with your entire piece.  Like this!

I love good, happy endings in movies and jewelry!

Have a great weekend!

I heart eggs.

I do.  Always have.  And if you've read my blog(s) for any length of time you know what a fan of "egg in a frame"/"egg in a basket"/"egg in a nest" I am.  My 6th grade home ec teacher taught us how to make them.  Thank you Mrs. Gallahue (who I still bump into around town from time to time—she runs with my kindergarten teacher)!

Now, I heart hearts just as much as eggs so this is a perfect combo in my mind.  Here you go my sweets…love this idea and site!  And if you want to get really crazy, you can graffiti your toast with cute love sayings like, "You're One Egg-celent Valentine!"  Corny, but fun.

My Gram’s Valentine Cookies…

DSCF6359 (Small)

My Gram, Mary DeLauter and I have made these a time or two.  I’m sharing the recipe because we’ve never heard one complaint.  Not even from grandpa, who gets stuck eating the over-done ones because gram and I’ve gotten side-tracked yakking or fussing over icing details.  Fussing meaning, grandma puts red hots on EVERYTHING and I’m not such a fan of red hots…although they look so dang cute (truthfully, as I age, they are growing on me).  But, I will never tire of these cookies or apologize for eating two or three in one setting.  Neither should you.  Ok, grab your heart cutters because here’s the recipe.

Mary D’s Sugar Cutout Cookies

¾ C shortening (part butter or margarine)

1 C sugar

2 eggs

1 tsp vanilla

2 ½ C flour

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp salt

-Mix shortening, sugar, eggs and vanilla

-Add flour, baking powder and salt

*Chill at least 1 hour

-Oven @ 400

-Roll dough 1/8” thick on lightly floured board.  Cut with cookie cutters and place on un-greased baking sheet.  Bake 6-8 minutes or until golden brown.

Butter-cream Decorating Icing (future Candie is editing here–I think this is actually called Royal icing)

½ C butter

½ C solid vegetable shortening

1 tsp vanilla

½ tsp salt

4 C confectioner’s sugar

3 Tbsp cool milk or cream

-Cream butter and shortening together with electric mixer

-Add vanilla and salt

-Beat in sugar, 1 C at a time, blending well after each addition

*Scrape sides and bottom of bowl often

-Add milk and beat at high speed until light and fluffy

-Add color if you like too…

*Keep icing covered with lid and store in fridge.

Screen it…

or bust! That's my motto!  I'm in Anaheim this week with Plaid Enterprises for the big Craft and Hobby Super Show and Trade show.  You could call it the big dance for crafters.  😉

Tshirt 1 (Small)
I'm excited to be demonstrating one of the "Make and Take" crafts in Plaid's booth!  We will be using Simply Screen, an awesome and easy way to make your own custom screen printed t-shirts.

Tshirt 2 (Small)
You can find the Simply Screen line in major craft stores around the t-shirts, aprons, canvas tote bag section….you know the aisle!!  Tons of very cool designs and paint colors.  This is a great indoor winter activity to scare off the winter blahs.  Nothing says hope, like making a new t-shirt for summer…I always say. ;-)  Or wear a long sleeve t under your short sleeve so you can wear it right now (this is what I'm doing for one of the show days).

For those of you in the neighborhood, I'll be watching for you!

Beaded Beads…

This is a little re-play post from March of 2006 that I swiped from my ol' podcast site, The Candie Cast.  If I remember right, I damn near lost my mind putting this tutorial together because I was living in China at the time and got the pattern from a Chinese beading book….a VERY tiny diagram, lots of loops, arrows and characters…you get the idea.  (Sorry for the language, but sometimes there is no other way to describe it.  Aiya!)   But!  A good challenge, none the less.   I've had so many people fall in love with making these beads, the latest Terry, from FL.  So Terry, this one's for you…

Imgp4879_small

I warn you these are addicting to make.  They will be spilling out of your pockets, purses, drawers etc….  I warn you!  Now have fun!

Materials-

  • 30 beads of any shape and size (just be sure the hole in the bead is big enough for the cord to pass through twice)
  • good quality nylon cord
  • bit of glue

Here goes nothing:

Cut 20" of cord and double it over so the ends meet and string 5 beads onto the left end/side of the tail.

Imgp5176

Thread the right end of the cord through the 5th bead in the opposite direction that the left tail is going-I call this a 'cross'.

Imgp5177_small

Pull the two ends snug so it makes a star in the middle of your bead cluster.

Imgp5184_small

String 4 beads onto the left tail.

Imgp5185_small

But on the 4th bead thread the right tail through in the opposite direction that the left tail is going (I call this a cross).

Imgp5187_small

Look carefully at the orientation here.  At the top is the original 5 beads and in my fingers is the 4 beads.  The right cord comes out and goes into the bead directly to the right of it.

Imgp5188_small

This is how it should look.  Notice how the cord looks like it is going through two beads side by side.

Imgp5189_small

String 3 beads onto the left tail.

Imgp5190_small

And cross the right tail through the 3rd bead.

Imgp5192_small

And the right tail goes through the bead directly to the right of it again.

**Repeat the last three steps TWO more times so that you will have a total of 4 clusters around your central star at this point.

Imgp5197_1

Now run your right tail through the two beads to the right of the bead where the right tail comes out (as seen in picture) and string 2 beads onto the left tail.

Imgp5198

Cross the right tail through the 2nd bead and pull the two ends snug.

Imgp5199

This completes the top half of the bead, making sort of a dome shape.  Deep breath, let's push on!

Imgp5200

The right tail goes through the bead just next to it.

Imgp5201

String 3 beads onto the left tail.

Imgp5203

Right tail goes through the 3rd bead, making the cross.

Imgp5204

Now this time, the right tail goes through not one but TWO beads to the right of it!

Imgp5205

String 2 beads on the left tail.

Imgp5206

Right tail crosses through the second bead.

**Repeat the last the last three steps TWO more times!  We're almost there!!!!

Imgp5213

Now, do you see that tiny gap….and notice you have one bead left?

Imgp5215

String the remaining bead on the left tail.

Imgp5217

This is where it gets a little confusing, but I think you will understand the idea.  The left tail with the bead on it goes across and through the bead on the left, then it keeps going through the remaining 3 beads in the cluster of 5.  Same goes for the right tail except it goes through the right side, opposite the left.  Remember that the cord should make a triangle at each bead junction and the cord must pass through each bead twice.  Tie the tails in a knot where they meet up.

Imgp5221

Trim the ends and dot the knot with some glue to secure.  Yay!  We made it!

Imgp5243

Please, please, please let me know if you try to make these and the pattern has a glitch.  I've checked over it, but I need a proof-reader so to speak!  And also, if you make something with these, please send me a picture of the finished project.

Baked Oatmeal…

I made baked oatmeal on a whim Wednesday night for dinner because it was sooooo cold and I needed something not only to warm up my belly, but the air in my apartment.  It worked.  It was awesome!  I'm sharing.

DSCF6349

The recipe is here.  I made a few modifications though.  2 tsp of cinnamon instead of a 1/2 because I love my spices, added a handful of craisins, and 2 tsp of vanilla.  Also, instead of using all 3C. quick cooking oats, I did 2C. quick cooking and 1C. rolled….for texture's sake, you know?

DSCF6345
And it was so pretty!  Don't think I paid $4 for a box of blueberries in the dead of winter, folks.  I scored them on manager's special because they were a bit tired looking.  You know a recipe is meant to happen when you get blueberries for $2.

DSCF6351
I was absolutely too excited to dig in and forgot to take the picture.  Sorry for the big gaping hole.  Kind of.

DSCF6356
This is plopped straight out of the oven in all it's toasty, gooey, loveliness.  If only I could send you the smell of it baking through my blog.  Oh.  My apartment smelled, well, sinful really.

Hello…

from cold, slushy Indiana

Recently I got a letter from a puzzled felter that started like that.  “Hello from dark, wet Paris,” she wrote.  Somehow the Paris part made it seem more enchanting…

Blog, I’ve missed you.  I’m truly sorry for putting you on the back burner while I’ve been piecing and stitching the exciting and dramatic puzzle pieces of life together.  Rearranging, reworking, ok a lot of working…which is wonderful and has made the days FLY by too fast!  Though, it occurred to me one day that I’ve been so focused on paying the bills, I left out a little simple pleasure called You.  Can we still be friends?

Growing pains aren’t just for children, I’ve determined.  And maybe children have got it all figured out….keep it simple, play fair, create, and learn…from our mistakes and successes.  I haven’t read that Everything I Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten book, but maybe I should.  In short, I’ve been busy growing.  I knew you would understand.

Amazingly, we’re still here in Wabash, ol’ Rocker and me, where things are always interesting…madly in love…even though he snores at night and gets in the trash.  He preys on me forgetting to take it out when I leave.  Fifteen minutes and it looks like the big party scene in Sixteen Candles.  How does such a little dog, make such a big mess?!?!?  Coffee grounds and shrimp tails strewn across the floor last week.  Sigh.  But, I can’t get enough of the little guy.  Admittedly, I might be two dog biscuits shy of being the crazy dog lady (giggles)!  Sincerely though, thank you for all the notes checking up on us.  I love you guys.

What’s new with you?  I wonder.  If you have time, tell me what you’ve been doing, reading, making, teaching, anything…or just how busy you’ve been.  For those of you still out there, I’d love to hear from you.  Thanks for hangin’ on.
