Meijer Sculpture Park…

IMG_0402

This time of year last year, I was visiting the Meijer Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids, MI.  I always associate the feeling of the air with moments the year before.  It's spring break here, but not for me so I'm taking a little virtual vacay.  Come on, lets stroll…

And then more sculptures for you to see and wonder about.  This place gets two thumbs up from me.  Actually the entire city of Grand Rapids does.  It's a great place to visit in the Midwest.  I'm off to work.  It's chilly today and I can hear the lingering cracks and snaps from the fire I had going last night.  I think it's time for another cup of coffee.

Tortilla Soup and Day of the Dead Crafting

DSCF7862 I love cooking for my friends.  The weekend went so fast, but I couldn't have ended it better.  Eating and crafting with my best pal.  Last night I tried a new recipe which was risky, but I took a chance.  Tortilla Soup.  AMAZING!

DSCF7863 Can I just say fried tortilla strips are my new favorite thing?  They are the perfect crispiness!  The only thing I added to the soup was a can of corn.   It went together really easy and I liked that it was a hearty, but somewhat "light" soup.  Good for Spring.

DSCF7864I got the "Survivor" place-mats at Meijer.  You love the way they set the avocado off, don't you?

DSCF7871 Within seconds of finishing eating, the table looked like this.  Kaboom.  Craft explosion.  I was so inspired by my trip to the Pilsen district in Chicago last Sunday.  I have been on a mission to make some Day of the Dead art.  By the way, the link above is the guide I used when visiting West Pilsen and it was really, really helpful.  The area is full of interesting things and so fun!  I went to bakeries, botanical shops, cathedrals, taquerias, a pinata store and the National Museum of Mexican Art (which was really incredible).  They also have great vintage clothing stores!DSCF7865 We ended up making bright crosses embellished with flat back crystals, old jewelry torn apart with my trusty Beadalon ergo pliers.

DSCF7868 And sequins.  Gotta have sequins.  The crosses are from Hobby Lobby.  We also used Folk Art paints and Extreme Glitter along with Mod Podge to adhere the flat-back crystals and paper embellishments.  Mmmmmmm.

DSCF7866 A little nod to Rocker….love of my life.  Thank you Crafty Chica for the chihuahua card!

DSCF7870 My friend loves baseball.  After she glued it down she said, "watch this thing be worth hundreds in a few years if only left untouched."  We giggled. "Cest la vie," I say!

DSCF7867 She went home and back to reality I went working away on some upcoming projects.  I'm so thankful for my friends.

It's been a fulllll day today.  Before I close, thank you Lark Books for a neat little interview and thank you everyone who has a copy of Metalworking 101 for Beaders.  I'm off to help some students with metalworking tonight as a matter of fact.  It's pouring rain.  I think I'll sneak a bowl of leftover soup before I head out.  Viva la Vida!

Resin Bracelet ReMixed Media Workshop

DSCF7448
A little bit of this and a little bit of that…put it all together and you get a sampler bracelet full of sweet little squares.  It reminds me of a cozy quilt.  This is a project I did for one of my new videos with Interweave.  It's called "ReMixed Media: Making Custom Beads and Pendants with Wood and Acrylic."

video It's all about using your metalworking techniques when working with plastics and wood.  If you like to experiment and play…you'll love it!  I just did a workshop with the Indiana Bead Society where we worked with acrylic sheet and it was a blast.  The flower pendants like the red one above were in full bloom.

For a super hands-on, inspiring learning experience check out my upcoming workshops with the Honeywell Center.  There are three different classes from felting to metalworking to painting and anyone can sign up.  The last one is based around the ReMixed Media video.  It's a two day class with the first focusing on surface treatments like painting, collages and resin.  The second day will show you how to deconstruct and turn your pieces into jewelry.  Jump in and immerse your mind in some creativity and sooth your day to day stresses.  I cannot wait to show you some new ideas!   DSCF7451

**Please don't hesitate to email me with questions about classes and the video.

30 Minutes: Necklace Idea and an Earring Book

DSCF7769Not really sure where to start!  My little cabin is hopping with projects!  In between gigs I've been trying to refresh some areas of my living quarters.  A new picture here, a vase full of twigs there, a can of paint waiting for it's debut on a chest of drawers.  It's time.  This morning I hung my winter coat in the "way-back" of the closet and said, see ya in December!  My favorite jean jackets and spring scarves are holding up the coat rack just fine!  Do you feel the same?

I wanted to share with you a couple things.  First up, another version of the Crafty Book Club necklace idea from the last post.  I couldn't resist the brightly colored ring with dangles at Hobby Lobby!  I added beads and  framed a piece of lace in the charm topped off with a Vintaj flower.  I have been really inspired by Lark Book's 30 Minute Earrings.

It's a nice little challenge to see if you can whip something up in a short amount of time——–the key is:

STOP OVER THINKING and GO WITH THE FLOW!!!

The 30 Minute Earring book has beautiful, chic ideas that are instantly classy.  Simple techniques lead you to awesome designs.  The other thing I love is that you don't need a ton of raw material to make the earrings—might even be able to use up some of your scrap metal.  That's also nice because if you mess up–you aren't out a lot of $$.

Why not get the girls together and make some 30 minute jewelry?  The third thing is I made a soup last night that will knock your socks off!  Sweet Potato Lovers click HERE.  I loved it with the yogurt garnish and naan!

Well, I'm off…I have projects to finish for my friend's up and coming book, class proposals to write, materials to ship, and teaching my metalsmithing class to rivet tonight.  Here's to robins chirpin' and daffodils bloomin'!  Happy Spring!

PBJ Quesadilla

Photo(32) 1 What do you get when you're craving a PBJ and have no bread?  PBJ Quesadillas.  Pretty much our new favorite thing!   It's all hustle and bustle around here—teaching and more teaching with my residency in the Honeywell Center's Educational Outreach program.

Last night I taught the Crafty Book Club to make these…

Photo(33)
25 ladies showed up to make them!  They turned out really great.   Memory jewelry never fails. Friend me on Facebook and you can see the album of everyones creations.  The more stuff you can hang off the ring, the better.  I guess sometimes more really is more.

Mod Podge Dimensional Magic tutorial

Hello People!  Quick post here.  It's been a crazy week and it's only Tuesday afternoon.  This is a video that the folks at Plaid, Amy Anderson, and I filmed this Fall using Dimensional Magic.  I remember that day so well.  This was day four of straight crafty project filming and Amy and I were going to a different studio to shoot the Mod Podge videos.  We pulled into the parking lot and were immediately side-tracked with picking up these ginormously cool……….acorns.  Never-mind that we needed to get our clothes on and make-up done for the filming, we were busy collecting acorns.  We always have fun.  This is what Amy made with her acorns.  So clever!  Back to the Dimensional Magic though.  It's great stuff when you want that resin look without the 24 hour dry time.  DM only takes 3 hours to cure.  Yay!!  There are so many awesome frames to put your pictures, art and embellishments in.  OR! you can always make your own with recycled metal like bottle caps or cut tin with holes punched.  The Dimensional Magic won't oooze off the side so don't worry if you do not have an edge around your picture.  It's good stuff!

Rad Woven Potholders…

Photo(21)Who wants to make a potholder?!?  Everybody say "Heyyay!"  I couldn't wait to show you these as they were flying off the loom.   I was talking to a friend about making them at a concert Saturday night—actually more like yelling.  Nothing says die hard crafty like recollecting and discussing making potholders over a couple beers at a concert, does it?  We laughed because we both agreed as kids weaving potholders seemed somewhat difficult.  But now, I can crank 5 out in a couple of hours (maybe less time even).

Photo(20)Check out Pepperell Braiding Co.'s "Loom and Loopers" kit.  I saw it at Hobby Lobby this weekend also.  Everyone I've shown or mentioned the ol' woven potholders to grins and usually has a story to follow.  It's a tried and true craft.  My friend, Charley shared a great memory of making them as a kid over on my Facebook page.

Photo(29)At first I fussed and strategized over what loop to put next to the last.   For real?!?  It's a potholder, Candice.  Sometimes I take myself a little too seriously.  By the end I was, grabbing, pulling and stretching them across.

Photo(22) You've GOT to use the hook though.  I remember as a kid not using it (and this might be why it seemed more difficult then).  Over, under, over, under…..

Photo(23)Next thing you know you are finishing the ends!  There are really clear instructions on the back of the box which I needed.  For some reason, I just could not remember which direction to go.  I get lost….a lot.

Photo(24) And it shrinks and shrinks because all the loopers are stretchy.

Photo(25) Done!  Ready for some action!

Photo(27) Fruit loopers.

Photo(26) And there you have it! I'm so hiding these instead of eggs this year for Easter.
